Young Carers

Who is a young carer?

Someone who helps a family member or friend who has a long-term illness, a disability, mental health condition or whose drug or alcohol use has a significant impact on themselves or others.

This maybe with cooking or cleaning, washing or dressing or helping with medication.

If you or someone you know is a young carer, please speak to an adult in school to hear about how we can support you. There is a registration form below to complete and return to the office.

What support is available to young carers?

At school – all school adults are available to offer a listening ear and to help with things like accessing clubs and completing homework. Our school ELSA is available to talk through any worries and help you understand how you are feeling.

In the community – Portsmouth Young Carers Service is a place for young carers to go to have a 'break' from their caring role. They have a range of activities for all ages as well as a half-termly newsletter.
