Year 5's Class Mass was wonderful. It coincided with the Presentation of the Lord and the pupils contributed so well. It was very uplifting to hear their beautiful singing voices inside the Cathedral after all this time.
Adventure Playground Trip
To build teamwork in the classroom, Year 5 had been working towards a class fun outing during the Autumn Term. We finally achieved our goal and were able to spend some time at the Adventure Playground next to school. It was great fun and we all agreed it was good to work together to achieve something as a class.
Bridge Building Challenge
After examining some famous bridge designs, as part of their Rivers topic, Year 5 were set a design challenge to build a strong bridge using a limited supply of paper, paper straws and Sellotape. We created designs using our research on methods of supporting and strengthening structures, then built a model which we tested using weights. We were all amazed at how strong paper could be if used in the correct way.
Outdoor Learning Day
As part of a whole school event, Year 5 worked on some maths challenges set by Mrs Munns. The groups decided what they needed to find out, what data they were going to collect, how they would record this and in what form they would present the results. It was a cold day but the children worked well in their groups and learnt lots about teamwork, problem solving and data recording.
Last year, some of the pupils now in Year 5, took part in a 'lockdown' song writing project with Portsmouth Music Hub. The songs were then sent off to be produced and finally we received them to share with the school community. They really are rather superb and we especially love the reggae feel of 'Covid Covid'. Well done Year 5, how talented you truly are!
Year 5 enjoyed meeting police officers in their classroom . The officers came in to visit the pupils to discuss hate crime and keeping safe within the local community. As always, Year 5 offered some brilliant insight and enjoyed the PSHE lesson.
We were invited to take part in a service of remembrance at the War Memorial next to the Guildhall in Portsmouth centre. It was, as always, a very poignant event.
River study – New Forest Sept 2022
Year 5 visited the New Forest to find the source of the River Beaulieu. We followed it along part of its course, taking measurements of the flow, depth and width enabling us to drawing a profile of the river. We all had a fantastic day in the forest and learnt so much.
Class mass – September 2021
Year 5 celebrated our first class mass thinking about the role we play in spreading God’s message in our everyday lives. We used St Teresa of Avilia’s prayer to help focus our thinking as we work on spreading the Good News message.
