March 2015 Stations of the Cross
As part of our preparation for Lent, we invited our parents to come and share our presentation
of ‘The Stations of the Cross’. It was a wonderful inclusive experience and with our parents and
grandparents we made stain glass windows.
World Book day
The whole school celebrated World Book Day, in groups we designed posters to promote our
favourite books. We had an assembly to share our work with the whole school.
MusicAs part of our performance poetry unit in Literacy during the Spring Term, we used musical instruments to add sound effects
Butser Ancient Farm
On a cold misty February day we visited Butser Ancient Farm, we got to view the reproduction buildings on the ancient farm and took part in several Saxon activities, including wool making and fence building. We also carved our initials in chalk, using flint.
In February we held a Science Fair, many of our parents came along to view our stands and see
all our hard work.
In January, we were very lucky to spend a whole week experiencing life on a working farm, in Devon.
Suitcases packed we said goodbye to our families and boarded our coach for the 4 hour journey.
We spent the week helping with many of the farms daily activities, including preparing and cooking
meals, as well as feeding the chickens and collecting their eggs. After a very busy week, we arrived back to school happy, but exhausted. A memorable experience, one that we will never forget.
As it is always fun to tie our learning in with what we are experiencing or are interested in, we have been creating pop up Christmas cards to give to our family and friends. We had to design and make the card with a pop up function, after which we wrote a set of instructions in Literacy for how to recreate our design.
Up for it
In October, 2014 Year 5 were visited by a team from ‘Up For It’ to talk about about University life
and all the opportunities that will be available to us in the future.
Charles Dickens House
It was a glorious sunny September morning, when year 5 went to visit Charles Dickens birth place.
A local story teller read us some exerts from Charles Dickens famous novels, then we got to explore
the house. We also spent some time sketching the house and surrounding area.
In Autumn 2 our science focus has been on space and our solar system. We have carried out a great deal of research into the structure of our solar system and properties of the planets within our solar system. We recreated the solar system using inflatable planets, to give us a visual representation of the difference in size of the planets, the way they orbit the sun and some of their physical properties.
Children in Need
To raise money for Children in Need, Year 5 dressed up as super heroes and made a donation to the charity. They all put in a great deal of effort and it was interesting to see the different ideas for what makes someone a superhero.
To further develop our use of practical resources in Numeracy, we have been introduced to Numicon. This has really helped us to understand different elements of number, including fractions, decimals and percentages.
